Having been located in Ferndale since 1971, the Dixon’s have been generating handcrafted goods for over 50 years. What started as Dixon’s Handcrafted Candles in a repurposed building on the property grew into a statewide operation. From this location, wax was melted, and candles were poured, filled, and set within metal molds. These handcrafted candles were then hand wrapped in plastic wrap and set for sale in the Candle Shop. The shop grew into Glory Days Emporium in Kalispell, where it stayed until 1977.
Dixon’s Candles remained as an idea that would eventually transform into Dixon’s Gifts, where the entire gambit of Gift ideas was sold under the Dixon Banner. The storefront now included various merchandise crafted from around the world. Having sold a lot of “Chinese Crap” for a while, reverted to its roots. The Made in America pride took over and went even deeper with a craze for Made in Montana.
Dixon’s Crafts
The Dixons returned with a renewed interest in establishing Dixon’s Crafts. This time it turned to specifically selling Made in America, Made in Montana, and bested that when they went on to Made at Home. This made-at-home philosophy led to the selling of free-range eggs, cakes, pies, cookies, and jellies. Around this time a “Very Sweet Lady” taught Luella Dixon how to make potholders. She made potholders whenever she was bored with the farm and taking care of the chickens. Needless to say, that was quite often. As the potholders began to pile up, the Bigfork Famers Market was just getting started. Established in 2007 to provide local artisans an outlet in the enchanting town of Bigfork, Montana. The Dixon’s have been a proud supporter of the market since its inception.
